DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR UK COC

Prior to joining your first Merchant Navy ship for your first sea voyage you will need to hold the following certificates;

  • A valid ENG1 (medical fitness certificate) or accepted equivalent;
  • Personal Survival Techniques
  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
  • Elementary First Aid
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR)
  • Security Awareness

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR DECK

  1. Sea Service
    • Be at least 18 years of age
    • Since the age of 16, have obtained either
      • Approved seagoing service of not less than 12 months as part of an MNTB (The Merchant Navy Training Board) approved cadet training programme or MNTB-approved honours degree, which includes onboard training and is documented in an approved Training Record Book. This must include 6 months seagoing service engaged in bridge watchkeeping  duties
      •  The approved seagoing service specified on your college letter as part of an MCA-approved ‘overseas collaborative programme’, which includes onboard training and documented in an approved Training Record Book. This must include 6 months seagoing service engaged in bridge watchkeeping duties
      • 36 months seagoing service with  6 months engaged in bridge watchkeeping duties
  2.  Four Basic STCW Courses (The MCA will accept certificates issued under the authority of any IMO ‘White List’ country.)
  3.  Designated Security Duties certificate
  4.  Advance courses certificates PSCRB, AFF, MFA (The MCA will accept certificates issued under the authority of any EU member state, as well as Canada, New Zealand and South Africa)
  5.  MCA-approved course certificates
    • GMDSS (GOC)
    • Navigation Aids and Equipment Simulator Training (NAEST) operational level
    •  Human Element and Leadership and Management (HELM) course operational level
    • Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) course
  6. Hold a Signals certificate issued in the last 3 years
  7. Pass SQA OOW written examinations at an approved SQA Centre in the following subjects:
    • Navigation
    • Stability & Operations
      • (If you undertake and pass an MNTB-approved Honours Degree, Foundation Degree or  Scottish Professional Diploma to the required level you will be exempted from the SQA  OOW II/1, written examinations.)
  8.  Hold a valid ENG1 (Medical Fitness Certificate) or accepted equialent
  9. Pass MCA oral ecxamination ‘C’
  10. The SQA written examinations and MCA oral examination must be passed within 3 years prior to the date of the issue of your Certificate of Competency.
  1. Hold a valid OOW unlimited, II/1, Certificate of Competency
  2. Sea Service
    • Should have completed 12 months watchkeeping service while holding an OOW unlimited,
  3. Ancillary and safety course certificates
    •  Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
    •  Elementary First Aid
    •  Personal Safety and Social Responsibility
    •  Designated Security Duties certificate
    •  Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats
    •  Advanced Fire Firefighting

  4. Pass SQA Chief Mate’s written examinations at an approved SQA center in the following subjects
    • Navigation
    • Stability and structure
  5. Hold a valid ENG1 (medical fitness certificate) or accepted equivalent;
  6.  Pass MCA oral examination ‘B’
  1. Sea Service
    • Hold a valid Chief Mate unlimited, II/2, Certificate of Competency
    • Have completed 36 months watchkeeping service while holding OOW unlimited II/1, Certificate of Competency. This period may be reduced to 24 months if at least 12 months of such seagoing service has been served as Chief Mate while holding a Chief Mate unlimited, II/2, Certificate of Competency

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR ENGINE

  1. Sea Service
    • Since the age of 16, have obtained 36 months combined seagoing service (in the engine room) and workshop skills training
      • Seagoing service of not less than 24 months in merchant ships of at least 350 kW
      • A further 9 months seagoing service on merchant ships of at least 750 kW and is documented in an approved MNTB Training Record Book (TRB) and its associated workbook
      • 3 months approved workshop skills training
  2. Successfully complete approved education and training programme
  3. Ancillary and safety course certificate
    • Designated Security Duties Certificate
    • 4 basic courses certificates (Issued under the authority of any IMO ‘White List’ country)
      • Personal Survival Techniques
      • Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting
      • Elementary First Aid
      • Personal Safety & Social Responsibility
  4. Advanced courses certificates (Issued under the authority of any EU Member State, as well as Canada, New Zealand and South Africa)
    • Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boat
    • Advanced Fire Fighting
    • Medical First Aid
    • Medical Care
  5. Other MCA approved courses
    • Human Element and Leadership and Management, HELM (Operational)
    • High Voltage (Operational)
  6. Pass the IAMI(The International Association of Maritime Institutions) EOOW written examinations at an approved centre in the following subjects
    • Engineering Knowledge sections
      1. General
      2. Motor and/or Steam
      3. Control Engineering
    • The General and Motor sections must be passed in a single attempt. If you fail one or both of the sections you will need to retake both section again
    • The Engineering Knowledge written examination and MCA oral examination must be passed within 3 years prior to the date of the issue of your Certificate of Competency
  7. Hold a valid ENG1 (medical fitness certificate) or accepted equivalent
  8. Pass MCA oral examination ‘STCW Reg – III/1 Engineer Officer of the Watch’
  1. Sea Service
    • Have completed 12 months seagoing service as an EOOW, III/1, on vessels of at least 750 kW in engine power. This time must include at least 9 months in full charge of the watch or with designated UMS duties
  2. Successfully complete approved education and training programme, meeting the standards of competency specified in section A-III/2 of the STCW Code
  3. Ancillary and safety course certificates
    • Designated Security Duties Certificate
    • 4 basic courses certificates (Issued under the authority of any IMO ‘White List’ country)
      • Personal Survival Techniques
      • Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting
      • Elementary First Aid

  6. Pass the SQA Second Engineer or Management level 5 examination in Engineering Knowledge section

  7. Hold a valid ENG1 (medical fitness certificate) or accepted equivalent
  8. Pass MCA oral examination ‘STCW Reg – III/2 Second Engineer’

The Engineering Knowledge written examination and MCA oral examination must be passed within 3 years prior to the date of the issue of your Certificate of Competency.

  1. Sea Service
    • 36 months seagoing service as an EOOW. A minimum of 18 months of this seagoing service must have been on vessels of at least 3000 kW, in charge of the watch* or with designated UMS duties and the remainder on vessels of at least 750 kW
    • (OR) 12 months’ seagoing service as a Second Engineer III/2, OR Chief Engineer III/2, on vessels of less than 9000 kW. A minimum of 9 months of this seagoing service must be on vessels of at least 3000 kW, and the remainder on vessels of at least 750 kW
  2. Hold a valid Second Engineer unlimited, III/2, Certificate of Competency or have met all of the requirements for a Second Engineer unlimited, III/2, Certificate of Competency
  3. Ancillary and safety course certificate
    • Designated Security Duties Certificate
    • 4 basic courses certificates (Issued under the authority of any IMO ‘White List’ country)
      • Personal Survival Techniques
      • Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting
      • Elementary First Aid
      • Personal Safety & Social Responsibility
  4. Advanced courses certificates (Issued under the authority of any EU Member State, as well as Canada, New Zealand and South Africa)

  7. Pass the SQA Chief Engineer or Management level examination

  8. Hold a valid ENG1 (medical fitness certificate) or accepted equivalent
  9. Pass the MCA oral examination

The Engineering Knowledge written examination and MCA oral examination must be passed within 3 years prior to the date of the issue of your Certificate of Competency.
